This desk is pretty solid, but it is a bit shallow in depth, so it definitely needs to be against a wall. The top shelf is really only good for stationary supplies, or a very thin monitor. I'll be using my laptop on it, so that's going to work fine. There's also a small shelf tucked underneath the desktop in the back, so that's handy as well.You'll need to follow the assembly instructions closely, as using the wrong screw in the wrong place could cause it to poke through the desktop. Also, the design isn't super intuitive, so you may be scratching your head a couple times while putting it together. I assembled it fine by myself, two people would make it easier. The fit of the parts was OK, though I did have to tweak it as I went. DON'T overtighten the fasteners, they will strip or bury themselves in the wood, which is actually MDF with some kind of veneer.I like the desk and I like the look. Mine's loaded up with plenty of stuff now, and it's steady.A word of caution - check for damage as soon as you get it. The packaging is really not good enough. The first desk I got was heavily damaged on the edges. The replacement was dinged up a bit, but was tolerable.
